![]() ![]() Regarding pollution, global warming, food, immigration, and fuel the last decade has seen a drastic shift in ideas, moving away from the deeply established order of viewpoints and ideas. In our day and age new ideas drastically shift the landscape of our times and indeed the very perception of our reality. The notion that the weird and the eerie somehow transcend or alter our perception of the working order of the world is a very interesting one. The Economic disasters of the last few years are examples of how this invisible force can destabilize society when manipulated correctly. For instance, he describes capital as inherently eerie, where the economic structure and balance of the world is built around something intangible and immaterial that still has such tremendous power to influence humanity in drastic ways. Mark Fisher’s essay on the weird and the eerie touches on many topics from fiction, film, music, and politics. ![]()

Stevenson was Protestant by upbringing, and a non-believer by philosophy. The Protestant insurgents were known as the Camisards. Stevenson, like a school teacher would have done, tells us about the Cévennes which were the site of a Protestant rebellion around 1702, severely suppressed by Catholic French king Louis XIV. ![]() Why the title Travel with a Donkey in the Cevennes ? Firstly, the attempts to challenge gender stereotyping is clunky, her characters just as contrived. I've realised that's not going to happen this time. My aim was not completely altruistic I do love to find a prolific writer with engaging work so that I can stack my virtual shelves with their stuff. I could have stopped and returned it, granted, but as McDermid is such a popular writer I really wanted to give her a chance to redeem herself. I therefore have no hesitation in stating that getting to the end of this book was a trial. ![]() ![]() But, I doubt my unfavourable opinion of this novel will trouble Val McDermid's bank account. ![]() Bad reviews seem anathema to other readers and this site, especially if they deviate from the conventional 'great read' response. ![]() |
